How Do You Steam a Cowboy Hat?

When steaming a cowboy hat, first, you need to shape the hat’s brim to your desired shape. After that, you turn on your hat brim steamer and place it in front of the hat. When the cap’s projection becomes soft, it has been steamed and is ready for shaping.

A cowboy hat has a different brim from regular caps, but this isn’t an issue. You only need to use your hands to shape the hat. Once you finish shaping the brims of the hat, you should let it cool down for a few minutes or turn on the cooling option on the steamer. That’s all you need to do when steaming a cowboy hat.

How Can I Restore My Hat Shape?

Many times, hats lose their shape over the years. During instances like this, getting it back into shape is easy. All you need for it is your hands and a hat steamer. Here is a step-by-step method:

  • Steam the hat until it is soft and bendable.
  • Place the cap on a flat surface.
  • Use your hands to shape the hat accordingly.

When shaping the hat, it is vital not to allow the hat to get too wet. In situations whereby the steam from the clothes steamer is too concentrated on one area, the hat might get wet. You should let the hat dry before starting over if this happens.

How to Reshape A Cowboy Hat at Home?

A cowboy hat can be reshaped as often as you like. Steaming the hat is necessary first. The fibers of the cowboy hat can be molded back to your liking by steaming it. After steaming the hat, you can curl the sides until they hold. You have many options when it comes to shaping and reshaping a cowboy’s hat. Have fun!

Can You Steam A Straw Hat?

To restore the shape of a straw hat, you can steam it. Steam can be used to soften the straw fibers and restore their original shape.

How to Reshape A Snapback Hat?

A steamer is the best way to fix your hat’s sunken areas. Allow the steam to cover the hat. This will soften the area and make it more malleable so that you can shape that particular spot with your hands.

How to Block A Felt Hat?

To block hats, you need the following: brush, felt stiffener, spray or wet flannel from a small bottle of water, iron, Plastic wrap, string or old ribbon, thumbtacks, and cloth tacks.

1. Cover your hat block first with clingfilm. This protects it as much from steam and water as possible.

2. Now, turn the felt hood inside out and apply stiffener all over. This is a tricky one. You want the stiffener to penetrate the felt pile but not to come out too much. It’s best to use a stippling motion to get the stiffener into the pile. Depending on how firm your hat is, you can always add more at a later stage. Too much stiffener can make the felt feel scratchy and uneven. This is not a problem, as the inside of the hat will be covered by the stiffener. However, if you plan to fold the brim up (for example, for a tricorn-shaped hat), then the entire inside will now be exposed.

After you have covered the felt hood in stiffener completely, turn it upside down so that the right side faces up again. Then put it on the block to dry. The felt should be dry within 30 minutes to an hour. Clean your paintbrush by drying it with paper towels. Wrap it in clingfilm. Use water only – the stiffener reacts with liquids and turns into a solid. It works with felt because the stiffener inside it reacts to steam and holds the desired shape ……. However, if you don’t have time or want to have some fun, you can put a little bit of stiffener into an old cup or jug and add water. Watch it puff up instantly into weird white ….. stuff. Icky fun.

4. Set your iron to steam by filling it with water. It is a good idea that you go somewhere with good ventilation for this. The iron will be on the steam setting for quite some time. If you don’t want your home to become a steam room, you might consider opening a window. When your iron is ready to use, place the tea towel/flannel on top of the felt hood. Then steam the iron, stretching the felt as you go. It takes time and effort to pull the felt down and stretch it. Don’t be impatient. The felt should be smoothed over the crown of your block with no bumps or folds. It takes time, but don’t lose heart! If you feel brave, you can spray the felt with water and place the iron directly on it. This can be useful to smoothen out any troublesome folds. But be careful because you might mark the felt this way. I have ironed my hands many times.

5. You can either put the hood on here or estimate where your brim should start. You can mark it by wrapping the string tightly around the felt until it is against the block. This can be done with drawing pins, but this can also leave marks on the felt. You can cover any marks made here with a hatband or ribbon.

6. You can be a little more free-spirited with the design from this point on. As I am still learning, I don’t usually have a clear idea of how the hat should look. I let the felt dictate the style. You can create creases by ironing around the felt, pinching it, and pulling the brim up. If you are looking for a simple cloche hat, I recommend taking the hat off of the block. Keep the ribbon at the crown’s end in place with sewing pins and iron the brim flat onto the ironing board. You can also use your hat block’s brim or any other item around the house with the desired slope to make a sloping brim. It is important to have something that you can iron against. If the brim becomes too loose, you can let it dry. (Remember what stiffener does when it comes into contact with water? Paint the inside with more stiffener. Then, iron it once dry.

7. There will be some puckering where the crown meets the brim. Basically, you want the felt to shrink over the crown so that it fits the head and then stretch where the brim meets. This is a difficult task. Keep trying to get rid of the puckering. The felt shrinks when heated, and water is added, so don’t give up, and you will see a smoother result. If it’s really difficult, I have tried to get the puckering area really wet and then placed it in an airing cupboard for 24hrs to shrink it. To stretch the felt brim, you will need to pull hard. It takes some muscle work, and it may feel like you aren’t getting anywhere. But keep at it!

8. You should now have a hat-shaped object. You can now trim the brim to your desired size and begin to think about trimmings and finishing touches. To give it a nice finish, you can roll the brim ends under and sew. However, this is a difficult task to do on a sewing machine as it requires you to stitch in a circular motion on felt. You could either do it by hand if you are a skilled hand-stitcher or trim it with a grosgrain ribbon or ribbon. Or you can just cut it quickly and leave it untrimmed. Sometimes I use excess felt I cut from the brim to make a hat band or bow or create some trimming for my hat. Go crazy! You can use ribbons and feathers, buttons, beeds or buttons, fabric, flowers, or fruit, and you’re free to go wild!

9. That’s it. The brim has been pulled up, and the folds have been incorporated into the design. I used the excess felt from my previous brown felt hat as a band and some leftover felt that I had blocked. You can paint your inside with a little more stiffener if you find areas where your hat is too loose. But don’t get too creative. It is possible for your hat to lose its shape if it gets wet, or worse, both hot and wet. You can reshape it or block it now that you know how.

Conclusion
